Homestead Weekly Update 4 (April 24, 2020)

Farm Updates

We didn’t have the best weather this week, but we made good progress just the same. We managed to put in some big things. One of which was rather huge.

 Garden Update

Food Hedge

I still have one shipment outstanding, but all of my other perennials have arrived for this year’s plantings. We finished out the Food Hedge with a trio of Pembina (Northern Highbush Cranberry) and single elderberry. Then managed to get a heavier layer of cardboard over everything. It’s still really hard to get mulch at nursery stores and large bulk mulch delivery doesn’t work well given my lot. I’m still trying to figure out a way to manage this. Of all the things I didn’t expect with this pandemic, a mulch shortage wasn’t high on my list.

Rhubarb Bed

We still aren’t ready to plant the rhubarb in the appropriate bed. There just hasn’t been enough time to kill the mint and planting bare-root wouldn’t give the plants much of a headstart to compete. I’ve put them into the 1-gallon pots the shrubs came in temporarily. Once they’ve gotten some growth on the crowns, I’ll put them in the bed proper.

Veggie Pots

I’ve started hardening off the three sisters, I definitely started these seedlings too early. In happier news, the sunchokes have sprouted

Aquaponics

The Aquaponics projects didn’t make much progress this week. I’m having a lot of problems with getting the tanks stable. Attrition is really high among the bluegill in particular. The trout seem ok, but I dropped an entire bottle of dechlor into their tank and had to do an emergency relocation into an emergency 10 gallon.
