My first flowers are about to bloom, and I’ve planted up a storm. I don’t have the beds well laid out in back yet, but I do have a couple of landmark plants to start putting in. I’ve gotten shipments from Edible Acres, Gurneys, and Michigan Bulb. Bed by bed, here’s how we’re progressing.
Food Hedge
My double grafted apple has gone into the back corner, as well as two native plums. Two new hazelnuts have arrived, I put them in small pots temporarily since the bed is nowhere near ready. Dave helped me move the two hazelnuts I’d grown in pots last summer into position along the garden wall. I used some old pots to protect the new trees from dog damage.
Veggie Pots
My sunchokes arrived from Edible Acres. I distributed them across two large pots. Not sure if I’m more excited about these or the Hellebores
Front Forest Bed
I started putting in some bare root flowers in this bed. A collection of hostas around the side of the house, four hellebores right at the front steps, and a few bleeding hearts in the center of the bed.
Prairie Bed
In the shady end of the bed, I planted a collection of daylilies.
